DSL Introduces E-learning For Rig Inspections

DSL has introduced an e-learning training course aimed at eliminating a significant competency gap in the Industry associated with the inspection and maintenance of Drilling Structures both onshore and offshore.

API 4G states that “Proper training of personnel continues to be one of the most critical considerations in the care or masts/derricks”, but until now that training has not been readily available to those that need it.

Realising that drill crew competency could be improved and that an inspection training gap existed, DSL has developed an economical solution for reaching out to the vast number of drill crew in the Industry, providing an E-Learning training course which enables ‘drill crews’ to be trained to undertake API 4G Cat I and II Drilling Structure inspections of their rigs.

The course is founded upon the DSL training and qualification for API 4G Cat III and IV Drilling Structures Inspector, which is an API certified course, provided from its API certified training academy in the UK. API 4G states “Field personnel should be trained to conduct visual inspections as required for Category I, II and III Inspections” .

Between scheduled Category III and IV inspections, drill crews are the eyes and ears of the rig therefore considered those best placed to detect/report any signs of damage and wear, caused by operations and/or rig moves. But, without the correct inspection training, many actual or potential signs of damage and/or fatigue, often go unnoticed until the next Cat III or IV Inspection, or an incident occurs.

This DSL course is designed to arm drill crews with the necessary skills and knowledge to accurately identify and report the more common faults and issues that can develop between periodical Cat III & IV inspections. Drilling contractors can be both be aware of the current condition of their structure, plan in advance for any required corrective action, or if a significant issue is discovered, take the necessary action to rectify any such issue.

The course typically covers; Fatigue/Impact Damage, Structural Components, raising systems, Bolted/Pinned Connections, Hose, Pipe and Equipment, Corrosion Issues and Sheaves.

The ‘E-Learning’ course will be available in various languages going forward, with the initial launch being in English. The course typically takes 5-6 hours to complete, and can be taken module by module.

Remember what ‘API Recommended Practice 4G’ says “Field personnel should be trained to conduct visual inspections as required for Category I, II and III Inspections”.
